Unlike what a lot of people think, there are many people who are professional online poker players and make a good living at it.

Many poker tournaments require travel the world over and poker players make lots of money doing that. It is indeed a hard lifestyle to support and handle, so here is some advice for those who want to take a fresh look at how to handle and balance their lives, while using their talents in the game as a professional player.

In order for your life to not spin out of control, staying fit and healthy should be a priority. Many poker players who become successful realize that their dream has come true and they can now maintain a lavish lifestyle. Sitting at a computer or behind a table for long periods of time, will not be rewarding in the long run, that is why it is extremely important to eat right and exercise as much as possible.

Professional poker players have the freedom to choose their own hours, to some extent, yet many will put 60 to 70 hours a week into their game. In some cases burnout and loss of money can lead to depression and anxiety, which is why wise poker players pace themselves and try to limit their play time to 50 hours a week.

As an effective poker player, sleep is another thing you will need. Avoid becoming a workaholic poker player, especially if it is the cause of getting enough rest and shut eye, otherwise you may not be able to concentrate and win the game. Don’t skip sleep for a few more hours of rest for too many nights out late, either. You need to stay sharp and focused during the game.

Studies show that adults need at least 7 good hours of sleep a night in order to be effective, but despite this, there are many poker players who skip their sleep, thinking that they can stay alert, stay healthy and play well without more than a couple hours a night.

Drinking should take place during breaks and not during a poker game so you can stay on top of your game, even if it relaxes you. Long term drinking will make you gain weight and also affect your poker game in a negative way.

As for substance abuse, you can not play to your fullest capacity under the influence of drugs and substance abuse, so try to stay away from all that., and make sure alcohol and drugs do not start controlling you or your poker game.
